Two things about Texas auto insurance that do not apply the same way elsewhere.
First, hail damages cars, not just roofs. Comprehensive coverage — not collision — is what pays for a hail-dented vehicle. Drivers who drop comprehensive on an older car to save premium are making a reasonable bet everywhere except a severe convective storm state, where a single storm can total a parked vehicle.
Second, Texas has a significant uninsured driver population. State minimum liability limits are low relative to what a serious accident actually costs, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is what stands between you and paying for someone else's decision. It is one of the cheapest coverages on the policy and one of the most commonly underbought.
As everywhere, the bundle matters. Pairing auto with the home is usually where the real savings show up, and it strengthens the relationship with a carrier you would rather keep.
