Ohio

Ohio is one of the more reasonably priced states we work in, and that tends to make people incurious about their policy. The premium is not the thing worth watching here. The hail terms are.

The market right now

The average Ohio premium sits near $2,080 a year, below the national average of roughly $2,490. Availability is not a problem here and carriers are competing, which puts Ohio in a materially better position than California or coastal Florida.

What Ohio has is hail. Severe convective storm has overtaken hurricane as the costliest insured peril of this century — insured losses reached $127 billion in 2025, and that was a below-average hazard year — and hail alone accounts for somewhere between half and four-fifths of convective storm losses. Tornado activity is also shifting east into Ohio from its historical range.

Because premiums here are not alarming, the terms often go unexamined. The three worth checking on any Ohio policy are whether the roof settles at replacement cost or actual cash value, whether a separate percentage wind and hail deductible applies, and whether a cosmetic damage exclusion has been added — that last one lets a carrier decline dented siding, gutters or metal roofing as merely unattractive.

Ohio FAIR Plan

Ohio operates a FAIR Plan for property the admitted market declines.

Given how competitive the Ohio market is, ending up here usually says something specific about the property or the claims history rather than about the market. That makes it worth diagnosing rather than accepting — the reason you were declined is usually fixable.

What we place

Personal and commercial lines, shopped across the carriers appointed where you are. If you hold more than one of these, there is usually something to find in how they fit together.

Let's look at your policy.

Send us your declarations page and we will tell you what you actually have, what it would pay, and whether anything worth changing has changed in this market.
